As readers of SLR are no doubt aware, Sunday (30 October) is Mountain and Cave Rescue Awareness Day. To celebrate, battery brand Varta has released ‘The Wanderer’s Guide to Winter in the Great Outdoors’ with the help of the British Cave Rescue Council and Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW).
This free downloadable infographic features, as one might expect, a series of top tips for safely embarking on winter adventures.
As the clocks go back on Sunday, the nights are now officially drawing in, and Mountain and Cave Rescue Awareness Day is all about ensuring outdoor adventurers are fully prepared for the change of season. Varta’s guide reinforces this message, with recommendations to pack back-up torches, portable power banks, warm clothing and a hard copy map.
Looking ahead to winter, Mike Margeson, operations lead for MREW, said: “To enjoy the season at its finest, it is important to be prepared. Sturdy boots are a must, hats and gloves are crucial and emergency rations are never wasted. It is also essential to plan your route in advance, make sure you have enough power to charge your devices in case of an emergency and spare torches to light your way if it gets darker than you expect. We’re delighted that Varta is helping us to spread this vital message on our national awareness day.”
Natalie Carney, trade marketing manager at Varta Consumer UK, added: “We’ve had some very positive feedback on the Varta products from MREW teams and we are now working closely with the organisation to provide even greater levels of support – including delivering The Wanderer’s Guide to Winter in the Great Outdoors for this year’s national Mountain and Cave Rescue Awareness Day.”
