Mohammad Ramzan, Founder and Chairman of United Wholesale Grocers, passed away yesterday (27 September) at his home in Pakistan.
Founded by Ramzan in 1977, United Wholesale Grocers began life as one-man counter grocery store in Maryhill, Glasgow, and now employs over 210 people with a turnover in excess of £220m.
Tom Slaven, Retail Director at United, said: “He will be remembered for his astute business acumen and philanthropic qualities along with his charitable work that he did throughout the UK and also in his homeland of Pakistan.
“He never faltered in his passion and desire to help others and his endeavours will be sadly missed by all.”
Ramzan is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Marking the loss, SGF Chief Executive Pete Cheema, said: “Mr Ramzan was a pillar of our industry and a great support to everyone who knew him. Very few had the depth of experience of the trade, opening his first grocery store 1975, and building that into one of the leading wholesalers in the UK. He helped shape the wholesale and convenience sectors in Scotland into what it is today.
“We are all deeply saddened by the loss, and our deepest condolences and thoughts go out to his wife, children and family.”
In response, Unitas Managine Director John Kinney, said: “Mr Ramzan has been instrumental in the growth of United Wholesale Grocers. He will be sadly missed, and we would like to pass on our deepest condolences to the Ramzan family and all their colleagues.”
Janaza/funeral prayers shall take place on Saturday 30 September 2023 at Glasgow Central Mosque, 1 Mosque Avene, Glasgow, G5 9TA at 2pm. The burial will be at Linn Cemetery, Glasgow.
