Founder of D.B. Ramsden & Co Ltd and the Today’s Group and co-founder of Nisa, Dudley Ramsden, has passed at the age of 81.
Unitas Wholesale released a statement on behalf of the Ramsden family paying tribute:
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our great friend, father and grandfather Dudley Ramsden.
“A pioneering force in the modern wholesale and convenience sector, Dudley’s remarkable influence on independent retail shaped the industry for decades. He was instrumental in establishing the Ramsden Group of Companies, Nisa Retail, and the Today’s Group wholesale buying group, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to support independent businesses across the UK.
“Dudley’s entrepreneurial journey began more than 60 years ago when he founded D.B. Ramsden & Co Ltd in Grimsby. His passion and relentless energy fuelled his commitment to independent wholesalers and retailers, ensuring they could compete with larger supermarket chains. In 1977, alongside co-founder Peter Garvin, he launched the Nisa buying consortium—an innovative collaboration that empowered independent retailers through collective buying power. Under his leadership, Nisa created a thriving national network of symbol stores operating under the Nisa brand.
“From Nisa, Nisa-Today’s evolved when the Today’s Group wholesale business was created, before merging with Landmark Wholesale to form Unitas Wholesale. This evolution strengthened the industry, providing independent wholesalers with significant buying power.
“After decades of tireless service, Dudley retired as Chairman of Nisa-Today’s in 2006. His influence was not only felt in boardrooms but also at industry events, where his larger-than-life personality and unwavering enthusiasm left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
“Dudley’s contributions to the wholesale and retail sectors cannot be overstated. He built businesses with a deep sense of purpose, always striving to serve the community and uplift those around him. His vision laid the foundation for countless successful enterprises, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations. His impact extends far beyond the businesses he built. His dedication, integrity and visionary leadership transformed the landscape of independent retailing. His sons Nick (Managing Director, Ramsden Group of Companies, including Dee Bee Wholesale) and Sean (CEO, Ramsden International) carry forward his legacy with the same passion and commitment and our deepest sympathies go to Nick, Sean, Louisa, Chantal and Elliot.
“We know many will want to celebrate the life of such a respected and admired figure and details of the funeral service will be shared in the coming days.”
Nisa also paid tribute:
“Colleagues and retailers of Nisa are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Dudley Ramsden, founder of Nisa-Today’s.
“From co-founding Nisa in 1977 to leading it to become one of Europe’s leading buying groups, his impact on the industry was immeasurable. Under his leadership, Nisa-Today’s grew into a billion-pound organisation, supporting independent retailers across the UK.
“Dudley was a true pioneer whose impact on Nisa and independent retailing cannot be overstated. His drive and commitment created opportunities for so many, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
“Our thoughts are with the Ramsden family and all at Ramsden International at this sad time.”
