Scotmid Co-operative and Scottish Bakers have joined forces in a bid to save the humble macaroni pie from slipping off lunchtime menus.
Following the announcement that Greggs was dropping the Scottish favourite from its range, Scotmid felt it was important that its customers knew that the savoury was still on offer in its stores across Scotland.
Colin McLean, Chief Operating Officer for Scotmid, said: “Macaroni pies are a Scottish institution and Scotmid is lucky to have a number of Scotland’s award-winning bakeries supplying us with their savoury pies. We want to reassure our customers that they can still buy their favourite macaroni pies in all 185 of our stores that have bakery counters.”
Alan Clarke, Chief Executive of Scottish Bakers, said: “The macaroni pie is a unique and iconic product made by bakers from Stranraer to the Shetlands. Greggs are a very popular bakery in Scotland and we have been surprised by their decision. However, customers in Scotland can be assured that they will still be able to buy this favourite in hundreds of independent bakeries including the in-store bakeries that our members have within almost 200 Scotmid stores.”
Scotmid have been working closely with independent bakeries throughout Scotland to ensure that their customers have options to buy some of the finest, award winning savouries, breads and cakes while are supplied on a daily basis into its stores.
This follows the recent opening of The Kitchen, Scotmid’s first ‘Food to Go’ provision, at Ratho Station, Carrick Knowe and Kingsknowe. The Kitchen offers quality, fresh food and the varied range includes healthy options such as porridge, salad pots and lighter sandwiches through to hot meals and pizzas.
