Four lucky Spar customers across Great Britain have received grand prize cheques for £10,000 through Spar’s Frozen Fortune campaign, which saw 1.23 million plays of its daily Ice Breaker game, plus 325,000 plays of its Fortune Maker game.

Customers in Renfrew, Grimsby, Salford, and Helston were the lucky quartet from more than 120,500 Spar shoppers who participated in Frozen Fortune between Thursday 2nd January to Wednesday 19th February.

A £200 holiday voucher was also given away every day to a Spar shopper during the 49-day promotion, and the average voucher redemption rate was an amazing 28%.

Four Spar Regional Distribution Centres (RDCs) – CJ Lang & Son Ltd (Scotland), A. F. Blakemore & Son Ltd (South East, Midlands, and Wales), Appleby Westward (South West England), and James Hall & Co. Ltd (North of England) – collaborated on the campaign.

James Hall & Co. Ltd managed the campaign nationwide and the technology behind the Spar Frozen Fortune game was developed in partnership with Abraxas Marketing.

The four lucky Spar shoppers collecting £10,000 grand prize cheques at their local stores were:

  • Abby McNicol, who received her cheque at Spar Paisley Road in Renfrew from Spar independent retailer Saleem Sadiq and Lori Watson from CJ Lang & Son.
  • Connie Robinson, who was happy to help a friend and collect the cheque on their behalf, meeting Store Manager Robyn Gobey at A.F. Blakemore & Son’s company owned Spar New Waltham store. Connie’s friend was unable to attend the presentation.
  • Tracy Dixon, who was congratulated at Spar Poets Corner in Salford by Spar independent retailer Mark Cleary and Marketing Manager Philippa Harrington from James Hall & Co. Ltd.
  • Antonia Sharkey, who was greeted at Appleby Westward’s company owned Spar Helston store by Store Manager Jane Rowntree and Area Manager Alexander Allen.

Abby McNicol in Scotland said: “I asked my boyfriend to drive me to the Spar store in Renfrew to redeem my vouchers as I had quite a few. That was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made! I never expected to win the grand prize, I was always playing to see if I could win a free product or a money off voucher. All the products I won were useful and I did not have much money after Christmas, so it made all the difference. A lot of the money will be invested into the house, but I would also like to take my mum on a big holiday to Japan or Korea. She has always wanted to go but has been unable to afford it.”

Antonia Sharkey in Cornwall said: “I missed the initial call to tell me I had won the grand prize. My reaction was ‘wow’! I could not believe it. I still cannot believe it! January is a dull month, so it has been nice to play something to win money off vouchers, and everyone loves a freebie. I first heard about Frozen Fortune on Facebook, and I signed up and played it most mornings. Some of the money is going on a holiday, probably a cruise. My daughter is a veterinary nurse who has rare breed sheep so I think I will also buy her a couple to add to her flock! I would also like to treat the family and save a little bit too.”

On behalf of Spar, Philippa Harrington, Marketing Manager at James Hall & Co. Ltd, said: “Congratulations to our £10,000 Spar Frozen Fortune campaign winners and we hope the money will make 2025 a year to remember.

“A big thank you to our valued suppliers for generously supporting Frozen Fortune, especially our platinum sponsors Britvic and Danone. It really is appreciated that we had the backing of big brands at a time of year not regarded as a strong trading period.

“We had incredibly positive feedback throughout the campaign from customers highlighting just how relevant the products were that were included within the promotion. Peak playing times for Frozen Fortune were between 7am and 10am and between midnight and 1am, further reinforcing how highly it was regarded by customers who prioritised it as one of the first things they did in the morning or the last thing before going to bed at night.

“Gamification sets us apart in the market as a point of difference and Frozen Fortune generated a huge amount of excitement with Spar customers. Thank you to our partners at Abraxas Marketing for a seamless campaign delivery and we look forward to bringing even more value to Spar shoppers through future promotions.”
