SGF slams ‘absurd’ licensing proposal

Scottish Grocers Federation has reacted with dismay to a report from NHS Shetland which proposes further restrictions on the sale of alcohol.

The report recommends that alcohol should not be sold in off-trade premises before 5pm and that ‘small shops’ should be prevented from displaying alcohol from behind the counter.

SGF head of public affairs John Lee commented: “It is well recognised by anyone with a knowledge of retail and selling age-restricted products that storing alcohol behind the counter is a form of good practice and good management in small shops which helps to prevent theft, disorder and anti-social behaviour.

“It allows staff more time to carry out age verification checks and is a key part of selling alcohol responsibly. This is an absurd suggestion which should not find its way into any wider debate or policy development on alcohol in Scotland.”

The report is being considered by the Shetland Licensing Board.
