The latest frozen food retail market statistics show another period of steady growth, with frozen pizza and frozen confectionery emerging as the star performers.
The latest figures released by Kantar Worldpanel look at the 52 weeks to 21 June 2015 and highlight how some frozen categories have significantly strengthened in the last year. Leading the way are frozen pizza and frozen confectionery which have grown in value by 4.4% and 4.2% and in volume by 5.7% and 2.9% year-on-year (yoy) respectively.
The strong performance in the frozen confectionery category has also been mirrored with sales of ice cream improving in value by 2.4% yoy, thanks to the heatwave down south earlier in the year, and consumers opting for luxury products.
The data also shows growth in the frozen ready meal category which improved by 1.5% in value and 2.1% in volume yoy respectively. The growth highlights the continued consumer demand for nutritional, great value convenience foods.
Commenting on the figures, Brian Young Chief Executive of British Frozen Food Federation, said: “Overall the figures show a steadily increasing appreciation of frozen food by consumers. The growth in the ice cream and frozen confectionery categories could also be a result of premium NPD which has helped to drive sales.”
Young concluded: “Reacting to consumer needs should be a primary focus for manufacturers if the frozen food retail market is to continue to grow. The figures highlight a great deal of positives for the frozen food sector and there is an opportunity for all frozen categories to grow.”
