Nisa Retail has helped the fight against poverty by joining forces with its suppliers and donating nearly four tonnes of food to people who need it most.
As it was announced that 913,000 people in the UK (which is the sixth richest country in the world) have turned to food banks to avoid starving, Nisa announced that it would be donating 3.73 tonnes of stock to The Trussell Trust charity which co-ordinates food banks across the UK.
For the first time in Nisa’s history, around 269 suppliers attending the company’s annual Stoneleigh exhibition generously donated the stock.
The Nisa team worked hard collecting food supplies from trade stands such as Princes and Kingsmill in aid of people who are in crisis. In total Sparkhill foodbank took 196 kilos away, Coventry foodbank 2.965 tonnes and Warwick food bank 842 kilos.
Clare Bryant, Nisa events and exhibitions manager, said: “We are overwhelmed with the success of this initiative. The suppliers were extremely generous and we are very grateful they have supported us to help those less fortunate. We are already looking forward to organising something similar and just as successful next year.”
Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.
Anne Danks, Northern England Trussell Trust manager, said: “It’s a very timely and generous donation from Nisa and its suppliers because we have seen a 163% increase in food bank usage last year. In total 900,000 people received three days emergency food and support from our foodbanks and we believe this is just the tip of the iceberg of people out there who need help.”
