The NFRN has written to International Trade Secretary Liz Truss to seek assurance for independent store owners regarding the recent announcement that the UK government will accept nearly three million packets of paracetamol from India.
Whilst the NFRN welcomed the decision to import the much sought-after tablets amid the coronavirus outbreak, it was concerned by comments made by Mrs Truss within the department’s recent press release.
She said: “This will mean nearly three million more packets of paracetamol on British supermarket shelves.”
In response, NFRN National President Stuart Reddish wrote to Truss for assurance that independent retailers will receive their fair share of this supply and that it will not all be directed to the supermarkets.
Reddish wrote: “Independent retailers are working hard to serve their local communities at this difficult time and are doing so at no little risk to themselves.
“I hope that I may tell them that they have your full support in the job they are doing.
“On behalf of independent retailers across the country, I look forward to receiving your reassurances.”
