Mixed response from newsagents as Mirror and Sun increase cover prices

A forthcoming 10p cover price increase on all UK Saturday editions of the Daily Mirror has been welcomed by the National Federation of Retail Newsagents.

From March 14th the price of the Mirror will move to 90p and, with pro rata percentage terms applied, retailers will make 19.26p per copy.

National President Martyn Brown said the NFRN had highlighted to Mirror Group the difficult financial climate its members had to operate in. He said: “It is pleasing that MGN executives have listened carefully to our concerns and recognise the valuable support that independent retailers give the Saturday paper in such a challenging marketplace.”

However the higher margin that NFRN members in Scotland enjoyed over the rest of the UK on the Monday to Friday editions of the Mirror has been removed. The cut in retail percentage terms from 23.8% to 23.2% of the new 65p cover price left Brown “disappointed”.

The Sun has also increased its cover prices for this weekend. Retailers’ margins will fall to match those of the Mirror’s, a move which Brown described as “a blow for news retailers”.
