A fourth-generation farmer and his business partner have launched Lost Orchards, a new premium cider brand that aims to replant Scotland’s disappearing orchards.
Andrew Husband’s farm near Dundee – which also supplies blackcurrants for Ribena – produces Katy apples from its apple orchard. The apples are harvested and freshly pressed at the newly installed ‘Lost Orchards Cidery’. This was funded by a £160,000 investment which included assistance from the Food Processing Marketing Grant.
The business has also planted 5,000 trees to, as Husband (pictured, wearing wellies) explained: “We have formed a grower group who have already helped us plant thousands of trees over the past year and whose aim is to provide us with home-grown apples for our cider for years to come.
“Our brand ethos ‘For every sip we plant a pip’, means that every bottle sold will help us to re-plant the lost orchards of Scotland and return a long forgotten national industry to the heartlands of Scotland.”
With the UK market currently worth £2.9bn, Lost Orchard’s Co-Founder Angus Morrison (pictured, left) said cider continued to enjoy a resurgence of popularity.
He added: “We have created first and foremost a Scottish premium brand original apple cider which we have developed further to include two fruit varieties – Scottish Red Berries & Lime, and Scottish Dark Berries.”
Lost Orchards Pure Scottish Apple (ABV 4.5%), Lost Orchards Scottish Dark Berries (ABV 4%) and Lost Orchards Scottish Red Berries & Lime (ABV 4%) are all available now in 500ml glass bottles.
