Prices rose by 9.4% in June, up from 9.1% in May, according to new data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The data shows food prices increased 1.2% month-on-month in June, following similar increases in April and May. Food and non-alcoholic drink prices have risen by 9.8% in the year to June 2022 – the highest rate since March 2009.

The ONS said the largest price increases came from essentials such as milk, cheese and eggs, but big rises were also seen for vegetables, meat and other food products, such as ready meals.

In addition, the data reveals that the cost of motor fuels jumped by 42.3% in the 12 months to June.

Grant Fitzner, Chief Economist at the ONS, said: “Annual inflation again rose to stand at its highest rate for over 40 years. The increase was driven by rising fuel and food prices, these were only slightly offset by falling second-hand car prices.”

The Bank of England has predicted that inflation will spike at more than 11% in October, coinciding with Ofcom’s next review of the energy price cap.
