Despite only launching three years ago, the Wha Gwan range of Caribbean-inspired drinks is gaining a substantial foothold in the off-trade.
Wha Gwan – “what’s going on” – was founded by David Mills, who drew on his Jamaican roots when developing the rum-based range, which is marketed as “perfect for sipping at a party”.
The brand launched with its signature original Melon Cherry Rum Tonic (17.2% ABV), a blend of melon cherry and rum loaded with vitamins that comes in 200ml bottles (RSP £3.99). A Pineapple & Coconut Rum variant is also available.
This was followed by 330ml cans of Wha Gwan Bomb (RSP £3), an 8% ABV twist on Melon Cherry Rum Tonic mixed with the brand’s Rum Clxxt energy drink, and Wha Gwan Shoot It (RSP £13.99), 50cl rum-based tonic shooters available in Melon Cherry and Pineapple & Coconut flavours.
The range, which a Wha Gwan spokesperson said was “absolutely flying” in Scotland, was further extended with the launch of dairy-free No Moo Rum Cream, a 17% ABV liqueur available in 200ml bottles and Glidin (RSP £2.99 to £3.99), an 8% ABV blend of Melon Cherry Rum Tonic with sparkling Glera wine that comes in 330ml bottles.
