Grocery delivery firm Getir has decided to withdraw from the UK, US and Europe as the business looks to focus on its home market in Turkey.
The markets Getir is leaving, including the UK, accounted for just 7% of the company’s total revenue.
The move, which puts around 1,500 UK jobs at risk, marks a significant change for the online grocery industry, which enjoyed a period of rapid growth during the Covid era. This has since declined, amid competition and a change in purchase patterns post-pandemic, as consumers returned to physical shopping.
The squeezing of the home delivery market has seen Getir’s rivals Deliveroo and Just Eat shed more than 2,000 staff between them in the last 18 months.
Getir entered the UK market in 2021 and was valued at £9.5bn in 2022 as it expanded across Europe and the US. It bought rival Gorillas for £96m in December that year. However, falling profits saw it shed 14% of its workforce in 2023.
The business commented: “Getir expresses its sincere appreciation for the dedication and hard work of all its employees in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and the US.”
