Del Monte to roll out carbon neutral pineapples

Del Monte Zero carbon neutral pineapple

Del Monte has announced the upcoming launch of the Del Monte Zero pineapple.

The brand’s first certified carbon neutral pineapple, the Del Monte Zero’s sustainability credentials factor in the entire supply chain from farm to table in the North American and European markets it will sell in.

Using a limited percentage of the company’s total pineapple volumes, it is grown in Costa Rica and given the sustainability thumbs-up by third-party certification body SCS Global Services.

After a thorough assessment of Del Monte’s Costa Rica pineapple production through shipment and sale to North America and Europe, SCS found that the greenhouse gas emissions linked to the pineapples is cancelled out by the absorption of CO2 provided by the company’s forest of approximately five million trees, giving the fruits a net zero carbon footprint.

The pineapples will be available in Britain in early 2023.

Del Monte’s Chief Sustainability Officer Hans Sauter commented: “We hope that the Del Monte Zero pineapples not only generate awareness among our customers, current and future partners but also provide consumers with a unique opportunity to support climate-conscious produce.”
