With the payment limit for contactless payments rising to £20 in June, it seems on the surface like the perfect piece of technology for local retailers looking to reduce transaction times, but are retailers ready to invest?

We don’t have it, but I think it’s a good idea. We use PayPoint for all card payments but they’ve not spoken to us about upgrading to that sort of package, and we’ve not investigated it. When they do it’s definitely something we’ll look at. From a retailer’s point of view, I think it’s great, but as a consumer, I have concerns over fraud – but then there are always issues with fraud. At least with PIN you need to know a number. The £20 limit seems right though, as most of our card payments are between £10-20.

I’m not in any rush to look at it, especially if there are costs involved. I think it’s the sort of technology that will start to catch on in larger city centres – London being the obvious example, but it could work in Glasgow and Edinburgh. With regards to the cards, I don’t know if that’ll last as it’s already emerging on mobile phones. To that extent I think it’s something that will become unavoidable, but for now, our provider and the bank aren’t saying much about it.

It’s on the radar. I’ve been speaking to Barclays about a new system and part of that would be contactless payment technology. The only thing that’s putting me off is the fact we’ve got a free ATM outside and that might get used less. I think we’ll have it within six months though – it is the future of payment methods and will really take off when it becomes common on mobile phones. I have a 14 year-old son and when he’s an adult he just won’t carry change. Over time cash will be used less and less.

I’ve not any experience of the system yet, but we’ve been working with BP on a new payment system, and I’ve yet to discover if the contactless technology will figure in this system. There’s no doubting that people would use it – and it certainly eliminates the chance of forgetting your PIN and the card locking, which can slow up transactions. Although fuel transactions are high we get a lot of shop-only customers who spend less than £5. I think they’d be interested, and that makes me interested in it.
