Police in Scotland recorded 2,106 incidences of threatening and abusive behaviour of a retail worker in the year ending September 2023, up from 1,130 offences recorded in the partial year of 2021-22, new research reveals.
An Accredited Official Statistics Publication for Scotland shows the number of crimes of dishonesty recorded by the police in Scotland increased by 11% to 103,393, including 28,619 accounts of shoplifting (28%). However, crimes of dishonesty was the only crime group which increased over the year.
In addition, robbery increased by 23% year-on-year to 1,877 crimes, the statistics reveal.
Overall, the police in Scotland recorded 297,425 crimes in the year ending September 2023, 3% higher than last year.
The publication says the recording of crime for the year ending September 2023 remains at one of the lowest levels seen for a 12-month period since 1974.
