Retail employees aged 54+ are the happiest in the industry, with two in three reporting high satisfaction at work, compared to 62% of 25-34-year-olds.
The findings from the State of the Frontline Workforce Survey, conducted by workforce management platform Quinyx, revealed that mature workers in the sector report high levels of job security, flexibility, and engagement. This contrasts with younger generations who cite burnout and job instability.
The survey revealed retail workers aged 54+aren’t checking out:
- 67% recorded the highest satisfaction at work
- 46% do not currently experience work-related stress
- 60% view their current role as a long-term career choice
- Only 6% worry about losing their job
- Only 8% say they have a lack of scheduling flexibility
- Only 13% say they feel unappreciated
- Only 15% say they work too many hours
Over half (54%) of retail workers aged 54+ said their job has not negatively affected their mental or physical health.
Toma Pagojute, Chief HR Officer at Quinyx, said:
“During a time when there is so much negativity around the cost-of-living crisis and increased pressure on our frontline workers, it’s refreshing to see how resoundingly satisfied retail colleagues aged 54+ are.
“Well done to retail leaders who are clearly doing a lot right in making their mature teams feel valued, stable, and well-supported. Retaining talented workers is so important, so the next step for retail bosses is to understand what makes this workforce so engaged and apply these insights to younger employees—helping them feel equally valued, less stressed, and more supported.
“By fostering a positive work environment for all ages, businesses can improve job satisfaction, boost retention, and create a more resilient workforce.”
